You should have just brought it back. People make mistakes.

Holy *** Jedi, how did you get any information out of that giant excuse for a message written in English? What UP run on sentence!

Guest

Lady, not girl. If anyone should be called girls or boys it should be you for your lack of proper grammar and your husband for being picky.

The two of you act like second graders and were meant for each other. Tell your husband to grow up if it is not your fault.

Does he beat you? If so you need to leave him before he kills you.

Wegmans removed salad dressing

I have shopped in Canandaigua Wegmans since it opened. I was buying Braswell's Creamy Vidalia Onion salad dressing, until you stopped carrying it.

I now have to drive to Geneva to do my shopping becausa they carry this dressing. You claim to be customer friendly and we are to get your best, so please reorder Braswell's creamy Vidalianonion salad dressing. This is a hardship with the price of gas.

I can order it on line, but it would cost about $5.00 a bottle, not to mention the cost of having it shipped. But if it comes to that I'll do it.

Buy a case of it online then it will last you for the whole year. That way shipping will be free.

What you people fail to realize about Wegmans Brand Products is that they are made by name brand companies. wegmans ice cream is made by perrys, milk is from upstate farms, cereal is general mills, and so on.

And only products which are consistently poor sellers compared to the wegmans brand option are removed. it is also not always up to the stores which items stay or go, especially with specialty brands like Braswell's whose stock is controlled by outside vendors.

Maureen L Yqn

To IHateStupidCustomers: What you fail to realize is Wegmans brings in a specific brand product only until they have managed to duplicate the formula ALMOST exactly. Once they've succeeded, their store brand suddenly appears while the specific brand you the customer enjoyed disappears.

This and has been for many, many years their operations model.

If you have been going to Wegmans for 40 or 50 years, you would realize this. The total goal is money, money, money...

Guest

Braswell's is a speciality, gourmet brand. Their salad dressings are good, but hard to find.

And their Creamy Vidalia Onion is not their best one, try their Peach Vanilla, Vidalia Onion and Summer Tomato, and Balsamic Herb Vinaigrette. Yum.

Patrick Nkk

so you expect a store to carry something just for you? yeah, maybe if you buy every bottle.

chances are, no one liked it except for you. so I'm sorry that they don't cater your every need.

YOU ARE ALL CLEARLY IDIOTS

OKAY, YOU MAKE AN ORGANIC BURRITO WITH VEGETABLES. ON THE FRONT YOU ONLY LIST CARROTS, PEAS AND ONIONS. I CAN NOT HAVE CORN AND THAT WAS NOT LISTED AS ONE OF THE MAIN VEGETABLES AS IT CLEARLY IS SINCE I FOUND IT IN MY FRICKEN BURRITO! YOU ALL ARE IDIOTS AND I WILL NEVER SHOP, OR ATLEAST BUY YOUR *** NAME BRAND PRODUCTS. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO WASTE 100 WORDS ON YOUR *** PRODUCT BUT I HAVE TO OR IT WON'T POST THE COMMENT. I AM EXTREMELY PISSED AND WILL NEVER BUY YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN. NOT THAT HARD TO PUT AN INGREDIENT ON THE GOD FORSAKEN LABEL!!!!!!!!!!

As a person with a food allergy or intolerance you really owe it to yourself to read the ingredients listed on the back of the packaging. If corn was present and it was not included in the main ingredient list then I would understand why you were upset.

Food manufacturers routinely only put the main flavors/ingredients on the front of their packaging.

This is not unique to Wegmans. Be a savvy consumer and read your labels.

Wegmans Catering--Calkins Rd., Rochester

Disappointing experience. Made a catering order for delivery.

It was delivered 2 1/2 hours early and had a fresh fruit tray packed next to a bag of ice. In addition, it was pricey and the quantity of food is not commiserate with what I paid. Also, the purchase was for my organization, so it was tax exempt, so they charged me tax. When I placed the order, they overcharged me for 2 items and I had to call back twice to get the order corrected.

It should not be this much work for the amount I paid. I had to make 3 extra calls to fix problems for something that should have been easy.

I love you liam. good catch. No2, you're a fool.

That is correct. They keep items on the shelves past the due date.

I bought a small bottle of orange juice once and could only take one sip because it was clearly bad.

It was 2 days past due date. They also sold me lamb meat with NO due date sticker on it and I got sick from it.

Hey No2WegmanApplebees. You posted a very similar comment about this on a different complaint, and a different store.

Which one was it? I find it hard to believe both had bad juice and lamb.

Unfair penalty

Let me start off by saying, I was a shoplifter. I acknowledge that what I did was wrong, and I certainly do regret it. I am a first offense shoplifter and I have no prior history of shoplifting. I went shopping with four other friends and another one had the idea to shoplift some groceries for a trip we were going on because our food was going to be so expensive. I decided, why not, let's give it a try. So, in total, three out of the five were going to shoplift some groceries and save some cash. Upon leaving the store, we were apprehended by AP and brought to the back room to get our info for barring, etc. To begin with, our two other friends had nothing to do with our deed and were completely innocent. Secondly, they were quite rude to our innocent friends, even calling one of them pregnant. The total amount of what we had taken had added up to 123.46 and as Maryland state law, the amount of the penalty fine should be twice that amount along with the amount of the items unable to be resold (Meat cannot be resold if taken off store property). Fine. That is understandable and I am completely willing to pay that fine. I know I was wrong and I would not repeat this mistake again. HOWEVER, they decided to bill this fine upon each of us. That means a $317.99 payment from each of us. This is simply absurd. Especially the fact that our two innocent friends were also obligated to pay this fine. We were unable to leave until we had signed this form and filled out the remaining paperwork and since the last train would be leaving within an hour or so, we had just wanted to get out and go home at this point. Upon further research, we had discovered that Maryland state law only allows up to a $1000 fine on items shoplifted. Seeing as there were five of us, the total amount we were paying was $1,589. That is correct, almost 13x the original amount we had taken. I understand paying for the crime, but that is just ridiculous in my opinion. Especially since they were charging 2 innocent people at the same time. Also, in general, to charge nearly $1,600 in damages for $123.46 worth of merchandise is preposterous. I would not mind paying $317.99 or even $400 worth of fines to Wegman's, as they are a good company and while I do not fault their AP team for anything other than their rudeness, I find this ridiculous. Hopefully something can be done or worked out but this was just outrageous in my opinion. In conclusion, I know I have made a mistake. It was a lesson learned and I am willing to pay my dues. However, when my dues add up to be a ridiculous amount, I start to get a little irked myself. Perhaps this was a good lesson yes, but not at this cost. Especially not at the cost of two of my innocent friends.

They just don't know when or where to stop with this persecution of shoplifters & people who make mistakes. I did not shoplift in their store, but was tempted to ONCE, but did not.

And they tried to FRAME me for shoplifting & have made my name mud all over town. We all know our flaws & try to make amends.

But Wegmans appoints itself judge & jury. It's wrong.

Guest

You were lucky, up here in New York we can charge shoplifters ten times the amount the stole.

Guest

You're lucky that they did not call the police. You all should have been locked up.

Guest

And yet I've lost count how many times I've complained to Wegmans management teams at various stores about people (children, elderly, all ages) taking food from the bulk section and produce area and eating it straight from the bins - without paying for it. The parents of the children pretend they don't speak English when I approach them and tell them to keep their kids out of the food, that it's stealing, etc.

They don't care - Wegmans doesn't care. Yet, it's a sanitary/health issue as well as theft (other consumer get stuck with the cost) that Wegmans completely refuses to make any effort to manage.

Guest

Good for you and your friends. You all should have been locked up.

Guest

Wegmans is the nastiest company, and unfair penalties is there speciality; thank goodness....I can shopped at other stores.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-706184

Are your for real? They shoplifted and deserved the strictest penalty possible.

The two friend's were not innocent in that they knew what was going on.

The price of food goes up because of people like them. I say good for Wegmans.

Guest

First off, your friends are not innocent. If they were there when you attempted to shoplift they are just as guilty as you.

Second, each person stole those items, why not charge all 4 the total amount each?

Maybe it will teach you a lesson and not try to be a cheap *** and drive prices of products up.

As far as them being rude to you, what do you expect? They aren't going to greet you with a handshake and offer you a meal after you tried to walk off without paying.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-698681

Wegmans charged them more than the legal penalty. That's just as criminal as what the shoplifters did.

Guest

Are you razy. I don't like paying for groceries but I do.

I don;t get what I can't afford.

grocery stores have to raise prices to pay for security for people like you. You should have been charged and taken to court!!

Are you for real???? Grow up.

Was hit by Wegman employee pushing 20 carts

was walking in to Wegmans when I was struck in the back by a Wegman's employee not looking where he was going. He was pushing 20 shopping carts! quite the shock and quite painful! Filed a report with manager at store and was told Wegman's would call me in about 24 hours about medicals bills. I had to call them because they never called me. I finally talked to some there and was told someone would call me back in 2 days. That never happened! Had to called them again. meanwhile it's been almost a week now since the incident and Wegman's is now refusing to pay out a settlement for medical bill, pain and time lost. Guess it's for an attorney!

Maybe you should take a very long look in the mirror before you start insulting folks.

I, on first hand information, know of one customer who was injured in an in-store accident and an employee seriously injured - Wegmans, in their onwn inimitable way, got out of paying for any medical expenses. The philosophy is screw everyone, except our family.

Clearly you'd be a liability. Look it up in the dictionary, kid.

Guest

Paper applications or regular applications it does not matter, you would not get the job anyway with your spelling and grammar. Also they want to hire people who can fill out an application online. Why should they lower their standards just for you to get a job.

Unacceptable service

Ann, a cashier at the Dickson City, PA store insulted me and my family while checking out. I tried to be nice and find out what her problem was, she just got worse. I will never shop at a Wegmans store again if these are the type of employees they hire. She even spoke and looked funny. Who would hire someone that looked like or spoke like a complete ***. Good people are looking for jobs and this is what they hired. Must have been desperate or maybe she knew someone, either way...wow. This store is a joke, never again.

You are seriously judging someone by the way they look/talk?

I agree she shouldn't have been rude and I'm sorry on behalf of wegmans that this happened...but this does not entitle you to being a complete *** when it comes to someone's appearance. Learn some respect. You need some.

Guest

To judge someone based on how they look. You are the problem!!!!

What a horrible thing to say. What if she/hes a war vet. What if she/he is a victim of domestic abuse. What if she/he has a disability or medical condition.

When you judge someone by their looks that shows who YOU truly are.

its people like you who need to take a step back and not only take a look in the mirror but deep deep in your soul. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Andrea Ahw

"She even spoke and looked funny/. Who would hire someone that looked like or spoke like a complete ***!."

Seriously?

You insult HER and wonder why you got ride service? What kind of business allows customers like YOU through the front door???

Guest

So let me get this straight -- you refuse to shop at Wegmans because they hired someone who may not be "normal" in your opinion? You don't say what the insult was but I've seen my local store hire disabled and they seem to be one of the few places where people with disabilities can get jobs. Don't be such a snob.

Guest

So the fact that she looked and sounded funny insulted you and your whole family? Maybe her mother just died of brain cancer, but she couldn't take the time off because she had to pay out of pocket for funeral costs after her whole family walked out on her for marrying a black man.

Maybe she got worse after you were pestering her and antagonizing her. Think about things before you start spouting off about people's attitudes, when they have to deal with people like you, and worse, all day every day just to make ends meet.

What ever happened to customer service, Danny?

May 2, 2012, bought money order at W for $100. Went back May 8th, wanted to return it for $100., no longer needed it for the purpose it was intended.

Patrick and Michael, 2 of the managers at the Won Alberta, Amherst didn't know the money order policy. Nannette, a customer service worker, incorrectly informed them that if there was any writing on it, W could not give me my $100. back. Called 800 # on back of Money Gram when I got home & automated message informed me that with ID (my drivers license which I showed Patrick and Michael because Patrick said maybe I found the it and basically accused me of being a criminal), both ends of money order, & writing not used for intended purpose on back; it could be cashed.

Had an appointment on May 9th., in Buffalo; so decided to stop by at Wegmans on Amherst; spoke to Megan, a manager, who informed me that if I had bought the money order at her store the would give me my $100., but they couldn't cash the 1 I bought at Alberta Dr. She called Alberta Dr. and said they would cash it for me. I spoke to her for about 15 minutes and told her not to lie to me because I had to take 4 buses to get there.

She gave me her phone number. When I got to Alberta, James at the service desk gave me a form and said something to the affect that they weren't comfortable giving me back my $100. and that I would have to fill out a form and go through the asinine procedure of waiting several months before I received my $100. After Alberta mistreated me for 2 days and the manager at Amherst, Megan, stabbed me in the back and lied to me (I called her from Alberta and she couldn't justify what she had done to me); James had the never to tell me to have a nice day.

I told him where he could put the form. I went to get a cup of coffee. Tried 1 more time to speak to a manager. Eric, a manager, just gave me the form solution.

I told him Good-bye and I didn't want to deal with him because W refused to give me back me $100. Then a 6 foot tall man named Steve with folded arms started following me around. I'm a 58 year old woman who is 5 feet tall. I'm a breast cancer survivor with multiple health issues who took a total of 11 buses, several phone calls with approximately 30 minutes on my phone until I had no more minutes, and 2 days of my life to resolve this surreal situation at a store that should know better to no avail.

I'm on a limited income and have been doing business with W for 23 years. 12 of those years have been at Alberta Dr. I will never shop at W again. I intend to write a long letter to Danny W, the owner.

Put a column in several newspapers. I've been advised to call 2 on your side.

Also, I intend to blog on every site I can find on the computer. I can buy my food at other local stores.

Mr. Wegman:

I just read your comment today.

Thank you.

I accept your offer of employment.

Guest

Hello there,

I wanted to take the time and apologize for the treatment you received at my Alberta Dr. and Amherst St.

locations. I am a bit taken back that my employees responded to your situation in such a malicious way. It is very obvious to me that you were a victim, and I cannot and will not stand for this. I have taken note of the employees that you mentioned and can assure you that they will no longer represent my family's name.

Each one of them has recieved notice that they are no longer employed with our fine company. Furthermore I would like to resolve your issue immediately. I have not recieved your letter as of yet, but invite you to come back to our Alberta Dr. or any location to be compensated.

For starters, you will be given your $100 immediately upon return of the money order that you purchased...no forms...no ID, your word is all that I require. Second, I would like to purchase a bus pass for you, and renew it as often as needed for the rest of your life. I want to ensure you can travel as needed. Most importantly I see that you are on a limited income.

I would like to help you with whatever situation you are in by offering you employment with my company. I have just fired everyone that was involved with this mess and need a quality leader such as yourself to lead my team at Alberta Dr. My challenge for you would be to retrain the staff and give them the knowledge that will ensure each and everyone of my customers leaves with a smile on their face. It is obvious to me that you are qualified for the job so you are hired immediately, pending your acceptance of the job.

I am very excited about bringing you on the team and I am very confident that you will ensure that our policies are revamped so that we can stop targeting and harassing innocent customer such as yourself. I look forward to hearing from you and hope that these solutions work for you. If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at anytime.

I am here for you. Thank you for your loyalty over the years, and I HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Guest

The rambling, abusive writer of comment #1 is probably an employee of this company & by their comment it is self-evident how certain targeted people are abused. From what I have read on-line, this company spends over 1 million dollars a year lobbying for their own special interests.

Some of the corporations in America are turning most of our elected officials into puppets which in turn is ruining our democracy. If you shop at the newest location of this company in Western New York which is located on Amherst Street in Buffalo, NY, you will notice that the employees don't seem to reflect the people who live in Buffalo and in particular the west side of Buffalo. Buffalo is the 3rd. poorest city in the country.

Hire the people who live on the west side of Buffalo or who live in Buffalo. They need jobs! If you sit upstairs at the Alberta Drive location to eat your drink or eat, you will notice large electrical plugs everywhere. It looks like a fire hazard even to a lay person.

I believe there may be a similar situation at the other locations in Western New York (Mckinley Parkway, Sheridan Drive, Amherst Street, Niagara Falls Boulevard, and Transit Road).

I've only been at the Amherst Street location 3 times and the last time I was there, there were 4 Buffalo firemen in the store. Also, the last time I went to the Alberta Drive location, the fire department was there and all the people had exited the store.

Guest

Wow, you're a ***.

Further, it's impressive that you can afford 11 buses but you can't pay for 15 minutes on your phone, very interesting. Perhaps you could divert one of those bus routes toward a bank and get a real account like the rest of the population did back in the 1800s. From your own account, they clearly tried to give you a form, perhaps instead of wasting your welfare-induced free time away, blogging across America, you could shut up and accept the form. Logic is hard. For one, your anti-Wegmans blogging crusade can't hope to bring down one of the single most successful chains in the North Eastern states, you're wasting your time. Again, time that could have been spent communicating with the Money Gram company, instead of blowing a fuse at the middleman. Its great how this poor James character offered you a solution and a nice day, and you pretty much told him to screw off - that's another point against your one-man-army-approach to taking down a company that deals with insane asylum rejects like yourself. On an unrelated note, your vocabulary is very impressive... impressive, considering the elementary level grammar skills at your disposal.

This entire complaint is ridiculous,

Have a WONDERFUL day :grin

Wegmans - Bel Air, MD

Updated by user Jul 29, 2012

I have not been back to Wegmans, and have no desire to go there again. I believe in the old adage - \"screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me\".

Original review Jun 28, 2012
I have been to the relatively new Wegmans 4-5 times, but never again. I have experienced rude, uncaring check-out clerks, indifferent department managers, and multiple problems with sections of the store. The deli dept. is posted as closing at 10:00 PM, but I have twice been there when it was closed and cleaned up by 9:30. The same problem exists with the seafood and meat depts. When I asked to speak to a store manager about some of these problems, two persons in their early to mid-twenties were sent out to greet me. They had no answers for my complaints, and obviously, were not managers. This was followed up by Wegmans sending me a card from the produce dept. manager, asking for me to contact him regarding my complaints. I had no problems with that dept. at that time, however, I have since bought several items in this dept. that were rotten in the center, and had to be thrown away when I got home and opened them. I will not be going back to Wegmans.

Wegman's Quality is going downhill.....fast

I am a (or let's say until recently) been a devoted shopper at Wegman's. However, over the past 6-8 months, I started noticing the produce was not like it usually has been. I buy mainly organic and at the prices, I don't expect to bring it home and see mold laced in the middle section where I can't see it. Wegman's is great about taking stuff back so I drive back to the store and return - going into the produce section to replace it and looked very carefully to find about 8-10 cartons of grapes all moldy. Fast forward a few weeks and I buy raspberries. Same deal - brought home and mold. Also bought bread - totally stale. I feel they built their reputation on good quality and unfortunately, their eye is off the ball now. Bought asparagus today - yuk. I am shopping around. Cannot continue to throw my money away or make a lot of trips to return. NOT WORTH IT. Good time for Trader Joe's or Whole Foods to arrive in town.

LUCKILY... there will be a WholeFoods in our neighborhood in mid-2016!

I CANNOT wait.

Right now, I drive 30 miles to a Whole Foods to buy 3-5 pieces of organic produce. I'll spend an extra 30-50 cents for a bunch of green kale or cilantro, etc, but I know the organic produce at Whole Foods is almost ALWAYS in stock and almost always Fresh and no matter what time I go there.

Getting fresh AND stocked organic produce at Wegman's lately seems like an impossibility.

We the customers still have NO choice/voice re the thickness of how we want bread sliced... Now the story is they have their new slicer and it can ONLY cut bread 1/2-inch thick!!

I believe this is just another of their multiple scams to cheat the customer. Thicker slices means more money for them, at #3.00 a loaf.

Original review Mar 22, 2012
Went to the Bakery Dept. to find out why they SUDDENLY started pre-slicing ALL their marble rye bread in 3/4" slices. Previously it had been about 3/8" which I personally preferred. I was told the 'big boss' had ordered the change. I asked why we, the customers, aren't even being given an option to have bread sliced to our preference and again was told the 'boss' had decreed this policy to the employees. So here we are - ?customers are always right????? and we cannot have bread sliced to our preference!!! Customer choice and/or service be DAMNED is Wegmans operations model. And don't even get me started about all their store brand garbage!

Did you actually read my comment/explanation of May 15, 2012? I fully understand the law of supply and demand which is your point.

But do you understand when you get less quantity of something for the SAME price you are paying more? Look at your cookie/cracker/cake mix/cereal packaging for example.

You no longer get a full pound of cookies or crackers for the same price you've been paying over the years.I can't tell you how many folks that are bakers who are complaining about the changes in cake mix packaging.

Guest

Getting fewer slices per loaf, thus having to purchase bread more frequently costs me/us the customer more money. In case you haven't noticed, we are paying the same prices for many products we have purchased for years.

BUT we are getting less and less - i.e. remember 48oz. bags of coffee? the last I noticed they were down to 36oz.

(quite some time ago)for the same or higher prices.

That is just one small example. Thus we are now supporting a local not-for profit that buys their various types of beans and roasts their own coffee.

How does the thickness of your bread cost you more money???

Corporate No People

My name is Dr. Steinberg I contacted Wegman's Corporate to buy 100 packs of dog bones at a discounted price.for my rescue dogs. No matter who I talked to all I got was a no. After wasting an hour nobody was willing to make an extra effort to do what it took to complete the transaction. I was told by the CEO's secretary, Rebecca Lessing I could not leave a message for CEO Danny Wegman Or President Colleen Wegman. I would think the owners would be disappointed that their company in today's economy would so easily dismiss a potential large sale. The corporate office made me feel like a nuisance rather than a valued customer. I am sure I can find another company who would like to sell me these bones for my rescue dogs.

Wegmans makes $6 Billion a year in sales...I think Corporate office is a little busy and I'm sure they are not hurting if they miss the sale of your 100 packages of dog bones. They are all about customer service but they can't satisfy everyone, Especially someone who wants a discount and cries because he is not given one. Give me a break Dr.

Rebecka, you cant even spell your name right! :p Just kidding!

Dr.

Zoidburg did say he wanted to buy the bones. Just saying.

You're a doctor and you cannot even follow basic grammatical and spelling conventions? Wegmans is not going to donate supplies to people; it is a privately held company, not a charity. You should try contacting the dog bone manufacturers directly.

Wegmans Poor service

On Saturday, November, 19, only one cashier open 35 minutes before closing at the new Northboro, MA store. The supervisor informed me that's all I should expect since they were closing in 35 minutes. There were 2 large orders in front of me and other shoppers still in the store. They boast about their service, but I've never experienced a supermarket that could care less about allowing their customers to check out in a reasonable amount of time. I just left my cart and walked out. If your time is worth anything, the savings at Wegmans are not worth the wait.

I find this hard to believe. IF this occurred, it certainly didn't happen more than once.

I live right by this store & shop there at least every other day- at various times of day. Not only have I never had more than one customer in line in front of me, I have never been more impressed by the number of cashiers available. They even have someone in front to direct you to the shortest available line.

They are leaps and bounds above every other store in the area in this department.

I can think of a few things to complain about when it comes to this store- but this just isn't one of them!

Wegmans doesn't give a **** about customer service, and that's the truth; I wish New York State and others locations tell this ***-artist company to go away

Guest

Why aren't you pissed at the 2 large orders ahead of you? You should have spoken up at the time and asked why they were there so late, apparently doing their weekly shopping at an inconvenient time...

Guest

No, intelligent shopper, I did not expect 20 registers to be open, just one more, or 2 in all, to help get the customers out of the store so they could close in time, and prevent the customers from waiting half an hour to exit. I've seen many stores provide that type of good customer service when the line gets long, but not Wegman's which is why I posted here, so that intelligent consumers can weigh the pros and cons of shopping there. Obviously your response to my closing comment is that your time is not worth much, so the savings justify that half hour in your case.

Guest

I guess you expected there to be an entire team of people just waiting to take care of your every need...when you enter a store just before closing you should not expect 20 registers to be open. Also, how is that poor customer service?

Didn't you learn in kindergarten that sometimes you have to wait in line.

Just so you know, stores schedule around the average amount of business..they do not have a crystal ball to tell them that a few large orders might come in at the same time. You truly have no intelligence if you had to complain to a manager and then to this site because you had to wait in a line.

Wegmans thinks Ovo-Lacto Vegetarians Eat Animal Rennet

I wrote to Wegmans regarding one of their veggie burgers that contained Animal Rennet (the only cost effective way in which to make aninmal rennet requires slaughtering the animal).

They admitted their veggie burger contained animal rennet but said:

"In regard to your comments about Lacto-Ovo vegetarians, some will eat animal-sourced rennet and some will not."

This is not true, and I explained to them it is not true, pointing out that the definition of an Ovo-Lacto vegetarian is:

"An Lacto-ovo-vegetarian (or Ovo-lacto-vegetarian) is a vegetarian who does not eat animal flesh of any kind, but is willing to consume dairy and egg products."

animal rennet is made by:

"Dried and cleaned stomachs of young calves are sliced into small pieces and then put into saltwater or whey, together with some vinegar or wine to lower the pH of the solution..."

So after explaining this to them I asked that they reevaluate what they consider to be ovo-lacto vegetarians. They have instead chosen to stand by their false statement and refused to make any further comment.

They have lost me as a customer and hopefully many other vegetarians.

How can we trust their products if they do not understand vegetarian needs, and when faced with facvts, choose to ignore them.

Wegman has made (to way around a problem ) the old fashion way take the 5th ammentment.till they change the way they think , personally you should avoid this shops that make their own brand with less information about the product they sell. If you can go to another shops to spend your hard earn money pay a little more for a little less ,than they will learn to inform .consumers about their own brand. Veg sign will be help full .

Watch out for their tofu dishes, too. One I saw near Montgomery Village actually contained chicken stock.

The certainly are not vegetarian friendly.

Beware. Read the labels.

It is disappointing to see the response you received for VRG. There are several people who call themselves vegetarians and eat fish.

That doesn't make fish vegetarian. Whether someone wants to go that strict or not is a personal choice. However, using that as definition of vegetarianism/veganism is not correct.

I admire ur actions and this is the only grocery store I been to where almost all cheeses say what sort of enzymes are used.

My only complaint is that u don't use non-animal rennet cheeses for the dishes u prepare in cafeteria section. That is disappointing and unfortunately i have stopped eating at ur cafeteria. I even requested the "chefs" to consider it and it was almost ridiculed. It would have been a big deal if Wegmans wasn't selling wegmans' brand microbial rennet cheeses like literally one block away in the store itself.

However, it is ur call. As long as things are properly labelled, u r doing good.

Wegmans consumer affairs department has had several communications with this customer, via Twitter, and shared our appreciation of him bringing this matter to our attention. The product label does not describe this product as “Vegetarian” or “Vegan.” Our long-held definition is that “Veggie” whether describing a burger, pizza or lasagna, simply means that the product contains vegetables. However, the ingredients in this particular veggie burger also include traditional Italian cheeses that have been made the same way for centuries – with animal-based rennet. Our corporate nutritionist contacted the Vegetarian Resource Group, a group that has a record of considering the issue of animal-based rennet. She was told by VRG that the issue of animal-based rennet is an important issue for some, but certainly not all, vegetarians who eat cheese as well as eggs - also referred to as lacto-ovo vegetarians. We realize our customer does not agree with this statement.

Because of this complaint, we contacted the national dairy industry to see how prevalent the use of animal based rennet is in cheese making. They did not have exact data, but believed that microbial-based rennet is now the primary form of rennet used in cheeses produced in the country. However, imported cheeses as well as some organic cheeses continue to use animal-based rennet.

We believe that our product is correctly labeled. We also believe that adding information to the ingredient statement on the source of the rennet would be helpful. That’s why we’ve asked Wegmans product labeling team to consider a new strategy to add that information. Furthermore, the supplier is considering use of other cheeses in this product. However, we are not able to promise if or when these changes will take place. We provide extensive information on our web site about vegetarian and vegan diets and our own labeling practices.
